Occipital Nerve Ablation
A MyMigraineTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone had an occipital nerve ablation? If so was it helpful? How long does it last? Any info is appreciated. I am not talking about the nerve block, this is where they use radio frequency to burn holes in the nerve sheath. My neurologist said it should last up to 2 years.

Hi
I have had this done twice now and mine have lasted up to 18 months. They can last anywhere between 6 to 24 months or longer if you are lucky. It just depends on how fast your nerves grow back and how they grow back

Both of my procedures I had to be awake for so you can tell them when they get close to the end of the nerves. I won't lie there is pain but nothing like a migraine and if you are telling I am going to be in pain at a level 6ish for 2 minutes and I am not going to have another migraine from that nerve for 18 months, I am ok with that. It does also hurt, like I bruised myself hurt the next couple days.

You can have this done as many times as you need and it works for me. I just wish they could do this to all the nerves that cause migraines...lol

Let me know if you have more questions

I have been getting them for the past year. I would get it with steroid as well to make it last longer. For me it lasted 2-3 months. I still had break through migraines but not as bad. Make sure if you do get them, chart when you get a bad migraine that could be a sign of it wearing odd. Hope this helps and good luck!!! 🍀
