Has Anyone Had Painful 'salt & Pepper' Tingling From Topiramate?
A MyMigraineTeam Member asked a question 💭

I recently increased my dosage from 200mg to 300mg a day and the tingly 'salt & pepper' side effect went from mild to kind of painful and uncomfortable especially right after I wake up from a nap or something. I get pretty bad leg cramps periodically and they seem to be associated with this but I'm not sure. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar. I'll be asking my doctor about it fairly soon.

Yes, I started having tingling in my extremeties and my face that my neurologist tracked back to my Trokendi, which I believe is very similar to Topiramate, which I have also taken. My neurologist switched me to propranolol and the symptoms stopped almost immediately. He said that I could continue with the Trokendi, but I would have to deal with the tingling. It was a "lesser of two evils" kind of situation.

Review the side effects of Topiramate and see if what you are experiencing fits in. I literally shut down at a similarly high dosage. I did not eat, shower or talk to anyone in my family. It was a concern to my father and I called the dr. To get off of it. Good luck to you.

Try taking potassium for the cramps. I have fibromyalgia and prone to cramps so I take potassium to aliviate it. The tingling is part of the course unfortunately but shouldn't last all day

I've been on it a few different times. I don't know that I ever noticed leg cramping specifically however I did experience pins and needles tingling in my hands and feet. Every time this occurred, it was within the first 3 days of beginning the med and would last for about 3 weeks off and on. It's a commonly known side effect that my doctors never seemed concerned about. Hope it gets better for you soon!
