Hormonal Migraines At Ovulation And Menstruation
A MyMigraineTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

Any suggestions I'm suffering so badly. After tracking my migraines I notice that they come around both ovulation and menstruation therefore I am attributing them to hormones. I will also get the occasional random one which ( like if I skipped a meal or was stressed or something) which is not as bad an can be moved with painkillers but these hormonal ones are brutal and do not shift with anything and are even surviving through a sleep now (which used to be the only thing that would help in a… read more

I used to get headaches right before my period started. They usually went away after my period started and were certainly not disabling for me. My migraines started when I went into menopause. If I were you, here is what I would look into. Start with an ob/gyn and get a thorough hormonal work up just to rule out hormonal imbalances. If you can afford a functional/integrative ob/gyn they can probably help you with ordering a hormonal eval. and from that could determine if you would benefit from bioidentical hormones. These are not approved by the FDA and not covered by insurance but from what I have heard, have been a blessing to a lot of women plus they are natural as opposed to the usual synthetic hormones that are approved by the FDA. Try to find a functional/integrative practitioner who also has been trained in western medicine and then you have the best of both worlds. The drawback, though, is that functional/integrative medicine is not usually covered by insurance but it's worth a shot if you can afford it because they will do lab work typically not ordered by conventional docs. Try researching the Institute for Functional Medicine. Above all, don't feel like a freak. We are all suffering in this together and your symptoms are serious and sounds like very disabling to you and deserve attention. Find a doc who is understanding and won't blow you off. I would also suggest contacting a neurologist. From brain imaging, I found out that I have an enlarged pituitary gland. A hormonal work up on the gland revealed no problems but brain imaging can either rule in or rule out brain abnormalities. Also a neurologist, western trained or integrative, can help you possibly find better meds for your headaches and nausea and can order the brain imaging if they feel it is necessary. They could help you determine if a preventative medicine would prevent the migraine before it even starts. Hopefully, you have family support during these times to help with the little one so you can rest.
Hope this helps and I will keep you in my thoughts.
