What Insider Info Can I Get On Botox Injections, Side Effects, & Efficacy?
A MyMigraineTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi. I FINALLY got approved to start my migraine treatments & as soon as my card comes in Im going in. I'm lucky to have finally found a migraine specialist/neurologist who understands, listens, & works with & for me. She calls Botox the gold standard. I'm looking forward to it in hopes that it works, but I'll be honest, I'm freaked out. I've read all the drug info. Now I'd like to learn from my fellow migraineurs. What might I need/want to be aware of in regards to the injections, side effects… read more

I am on round 27 of Botox, and it has worked out great. The treatment reduced about 80% of my tension related migraines. I Highly recommend the shots. The only problem I had was if the Doctor placed the forehead shots to low It would cause my eyelids to droop of sag LOL...no one but my wife and I could tell.

Regarding the drooping, I think results might depend on the doctor. My doctor even put injections in my eyebrows and I never had any drooping. But those eyebrow shots are way worse than bee stings! The rest of the shots were easy though. My neurologist always did the eyebrows first because then the rest seemed like no big deal. But if you can handle migraines, you can handle the Botox. My results were mixed. It helped about 70% the first 9 months, but then I started getting headaches from lack of movement. I'm meeting my neurologist for a virtual Dr appt today and I plan on asking about Botox again. But mainly I want to try the CGRPs! Good luck and don't be too scared. It's a tried and trued method. Oh, mine lasted about 4 months after the last injection. That's why they stage them every three months. Also... My neurologist only used 1 1/2 bottles so the remaining botox he injected into my shoulders whete my muscles are locked up hard as rocks. It helped the pain there too!

I have found them to be effective in reducing the intensity of migraines. The shots were like little bee stings you quickly get over. I never got a frozen forehead, but did get droopy eyelids if the shots are given too low on the forehead. Well worth it!

It may take a few rounds of injections to become effective.

Hopefully it works for you. I'm one that it did not work for, but I was just approved to Emgality, and so far so good. The big thing that hit me with the botox was how painful the shots were (enough that each time I got the injection I got a migraine. Also, you have to be ready for the frozen forehead - they are placing them for optimal relief no optimal appearance. I had the wonky forehead effect a couple of times.
