What To Expect From Your First Neurology Appointment
A MyMigraineTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello everyone, I'm quite new here so I'm sure someone will help me.

I have my first Neurology appointment on Friday and I'm sort of really worried about it as I want to get the most out of it that I can.

I have my migraine/headache diary that I have been writing since the "cluster type headaches" occurred, I have my repeat prescription script to show them the drugs that I'm on currently and my husband is coming too as he saw the last attack.. Is there anything else that they need?

Will I be… read more

The first appointment is always stressful - take a notepad to write down any instructions or references to resources your Doctor has. Take in a list of questions and concerns, and ask them even if you think it seems silly. It's not. The doctor might order tests, and or things like an MRI. Depending on your symptoms there will be a lot of things ruled out at first that can sound scary up front. Ask what each test is looking for and why, but don't panic. A lot of determining what a migraine is means finding out what it isn't.

Also keep in mind, the Doctor works for you, period. If he is condescending, too busy to answer questions or otherwise a jerk - fire him and find another.

Yes, your diary will help. They may order tests/scans, but most likely won't occur at that actual appointment.
Anxiety, stress and depression can go hand-in-hand with migraine sufferers; or anyone with chronic-type medical issues. Make sure you mention that.

Taking your husband with you will prove invaluable. Make sure he writes things down, as Rhotonk suggested above. He may be able to answer the doc's questions even better than you; as he is on the outside looking in.

Are you seeing an actual neurologist or someone who specializes in headaches? I know several neuros specialize in headaches. We had seen one neuro who didn't really have a clue as to what to do for migraines. Especially chronic, intractable ones. That's when I found a pain specialist for my daughter. It took lots of research and calling around to find someone that she "clicked" with and understood her, completely.

Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes.

Just remember to breathe and try to always take someone with you who can write down what the doctor says. I am always too worried and scared to write it down correctly so having someone there to do that is important. Also they are there for you, so ask questions and take the time to find out.

I would write down any questions you may want to ask. Medication you've tried so far although it will be in your notes. Just take as much information as possible to give the neurologist a idea of your illness.

when I went for my appointment, they went through my history, what medication I was on, how long ive had migraines etc. they will probably make you an appointment for scan/tests after your 1st appointment. Good luck on Friday.
