My Doctor Wants To Start Me On Topomax. Anyone Else Take This?
A MyMigraineTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm afraid to try topomax as I'm super sensitive to medications. But gabapentin not working to prevent my migraines. Would love input from others!

The neurologist I was seeing at the time put me on Topamax with the words "You should be migraine free in a month.", which really should have sent up red flags! It did help reduce them for about 6 months but the doctor refused to take me off or change medications. He wasn't a listener. I ended up having kidney stones , bed ridden and in agony for 10 days. BTW, Percocet does nothing for kidney stone pain but ibuprofen sure did! The neurologist tried to convince me that it wasn't caused by the Topamax. Armed with my records, I saw a nutritionist. Nope, no indications in my diet or history of predisposition of kidney stones. Looked up Topamax and lo and behold- side effect: kidney stones.

Not everyone reacts the same to meds though. That was my only side effect in a list of them. Some people do fine on it.

The side effects are terrible. I'm not sensitive to medications, but Topomax made me forgetful, spacey, and uncoordinated. It didn't help prevent migraines, but it did help me sleep.

Topomax affected me the same way. Totally took my short term memory. It also didn't help.

I had to go off of topamax bcz of the horrible side effects--basically i was a zombie. The nickname of "dope-amax" rang true for me. It did not prevent my migraines but did help a little. It just wasn't worth the side effects.
