I’m recovering from having pneumonia and I had a migraine every one of the 4 days I was in the hospital. Since my discharge, I was waking up to tension type headaches. I stopped taking it 2 days ago, and my pain has improved.

The Show Full Answer

Yes, Tylenol (acetaminophen) can absolutely cause rebound headaches, also known as medication overuse headaches (MOH). Taking it 2-3 times daily for nearly 3 weeks puts it well above the threshold that's generally associated with overuse — which is 15 or more days per month for simple pain relievers like acetaminophen.

The good news is that stopping it 2 days ago and already feeling improvement is a really positive sign! That pattern is very consistent with MOH resolving. To help avoid this cycle going forward, here are some key things to keep in mind:

- Try to limit OTC pain relievers like Tylenol to fewer than 14 days per month
- Take it early at the first sign of a migraine for the best results
- Tylenol works best for mild to moderate migraine attacks — for severe attacks, other options may be more effective
- If migraines become harder to control, let your doctor know

It's worth having a conversation with your doctor about a longer-term migraine management plan, especially given the frequency you've been experiencing.
