Elyxyb (celecoxib) is a prescription medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat acute migraine with or without aura in adults.

How Elyxyb Works and How It’s Taken

Elyxyb is a type of medication called a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by blocking an enzyme called COX-2, which helps make substances called prostaglandins. These substances are linked to pain and inflammation.

In migraine, this may help reduce pain and inflammation, although the exact way it works is not fully known. Doctors prescribe Elyxyb when a migraine attack with or without aura starts in an adult.

Elyxyb is given as an oral solution (liquid medicine) taken by mouth. It is used as needed for migraine attacks.

Typical Dosing for Migraine

The recommended dose of Elyxyb for migraine is 120 milligrams taken by mouth, with or without food. Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours.

Some individuals may need a lower dose of 60 milligrams, including those with moderate liver problems or those who process the medicine more slowly.

This information is based on the prescribing information, but your healthcare provider may tailor your treatment plan. Always follow their guidance.

Elyxyb Side Effects

In clinical studies of Elyxyb for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults, the most common side effect occurred in about 3 percent of people. This side effect was:

  • Dysgeusia (bad, unusual, or metallic taste in your mouth)

Serious Side Effects and Warnings

Elyxyb can cause serious side effects that may require immediate medical attention. These include:

  • Cardiovascular thrombotic events — Serious heart and blood vessel events, including heart attack and stroke, can occur.
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, or perforation — Bleeding, sores, or a tear in the stomach, intestines, or esophagus can occur.
  • Hepatotoxicity — Liver problems, including hepatitis, jaundice, liver failure, or liver damage, can occur.
  • Hypertension — Increased blood pressure can occur during treatment.
  • Heart failure and edema — Fluid buildup can cause swelling and shortness of breath.
  • Renal toxicity — Kidney problems, including kidney failure, kidney injury, or interstitial nephritis, can occur.
  • Hyperkalemia — High potassium levels can occur.
  • Anaphylactic reactions — Severe allergic reactions can cause trouble breathing, and angioedema can cause swelling of the face or throat.
  • Asthma worsening in individuals with aspirin-sensitive asthma — Severe breathing problems can occur.
  • Serious skin reactions — These can include Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.
  • Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) — Fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, or organ problems may occur.
  • Medication overuse headache — More frequent or worse headaches can occur from using acute migraine medicines too often.
  • Hematological toxicity — Blood-related problems, including anemia or increased risk of bleeding, can occur.
  • Fetal toxicity during pregnancy — Elyxyb may harm your baby if you are pregnant, including low amniotic fluid and early closure of a blood vessel in the fetus.

What To Know Before Taking Elyxyb

Your doctor may monitor your blood pressure when starting Elyxyb and during treatment because NSAIDs can cause new or worsening high blood pressure.

Tell your doctor if you have any allergies to celecoxib or any ingredients in Elyxyb.

Tell your doctor about all medicines you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. NSAIDs like Elyxyb can interact with other medicines and may cause serious side effects.

Before taking Elyxyb, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions, especially if you have:

  • Liver or kidney problems
  • A history of stomach ulcers or bleeding in your stomach or intestines
  • Heart disease or risk factors for heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Asthma

Do not take Elyxyb if you:

  • Have had a serious allergic reaction to celecoxib or any ingredients in Elyxyb
  • Are allergic to sulfonamides
  • Have had asthma, hives, or another allergic reaction after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
  • Are having or recently had coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery

Use Elyxyb for the fewest number of days per month, as needed.

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding while taking Elyxyb, talk with your doctor about the risks and benefits.

Avoid using NSAIDs like Elyxyb at about 30 weeks of pregnancy and later because they may harm your baby if you are pregnant.

If an NSAID is needed between about 20 and 30 weeks of pregnancy, it should be used at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest time possible. Your doctor may consider ultrasound monitoring of amniotic fluid if treatment lasts longer than 48 hours.

Community FAQs

These answers are fact-checked by our editorial staff.

How effective is Elyxyb?

In two studies of adults treating a migraine attack with moderate to severe pain, Elyxyb was tested at a dose of 120 milligrams, and results were measured two hours after treatment.

In one study, 32.4 percent of people taking Elyxyb were pain-free at two hours, compared with 25.3 percent of people taking placebo (an inactive treatment). In the second study, 35.1 percent of people taking Elyxyb were pain-free at two hours, compared with 21.0 percent of people taking placebo.

Elyxyb also helped more people become free of their most bothersome symptom, such as sensitivity to light, sensitivity to sound, or nausea, at two hours compared with placebo.

How long does Elyxyb take to work for a migraine?

In migraine studies, the main results were measured two hours after people took a 120-milligram dose of Elyxyb. More people taking Elyxyb were free from migraine pain or free from their most bothersome symptom at two hours compared with people taking placebo.

In a fasting study, celecoxib from Elyxyb reached peak blood levels in a median of one hour, with a range of about 0.67 to three hours after taking the medicine.

What tests or monitoring are needed with Elyxyb for migraine?

Your doctor may monitor your blood pressure when starting Elyxyb and during treatment because NSAIDs can cause new or worsening high blood pressure.

Serious bleeding, liver problems, and kidney injury can sometimes happen without warning symptoms. If Elyxyb is used over time, your doctor may consider blood tests such as a complete blood count (CBC) and a chemistry profile to help monitor your health.

Some individuals may need closer monitoring while taking Elyxyb, especially those who also take:

  • Anticoagulants or other medicines that increase bleeding risk
  • Lithium
  • Digoxin
  • Methotrexate
  • Cyclosporine
  • ACE inhibitors
  • Angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARBs)
  • Beta-blockers
  • Diuretics

Your doctor may also monitor kidney function, bleeding risk, or medicine levels depending on your medical condition and the medicines you take.
