How Nurtec ODT Works and How It’s Taken

Nurtec ODT is a calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the CGRP receptor, which is involved in migraine.

Doctors prescribe Nurtec ODT when adults need treatment for a migraine attack, with or without aura. Nurtec ODT is also used for preventive treatment of episodic migraine in adults.

Nurtec ODT is an orally disintegrating tablet taken by mouth. It is typically taken as needed for a migraine attack or every other day for preventive treatment. Nurtec ODT can be taken with or without food.

Typical Dosing for Migraine

The recommended dose of Nurtec ODT for migraine attacks is 75 milligrams taken by mouth as needed. The recommended dose of Nurtec ODT for preventing migraine is 75 milligrams taken by mouth every other day.

A healthcare provider may advise you not to take more than one dose in 24 hours. The safety of using more than 18 doses in a 30-day period has not been established.

Nurtec ODT Side Effects

What To Know Before Taking Nurtec ODT

Tell your doctor if you have any allergies to rimegepant or any ingredients in Nurtec ODT. Do not take Nurtec ODT if you have had a serious allergic reaction to rimegepant or any of its ingredients.

Tell your doctor about all medicines you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and supplements.

Before you take Nurtec ODT, tell your healthcare provider about all your medical conditions, including if you:

  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have circulation problems in your fingers and toes
  • Have liver or kidney problems

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding while taking Nurtec ODT, talk with your doctor about the risks and benefits. There is a pregnancy exposure registry for people who take Nurtec ODT during pregnancy.

How effective is Nurtec ODT?

In a study of adults treating a migraine attack, about 21 percent of people taking Nurtec ODT were pain-free at two hours, compared with about 11 percent taking placebo (an inactive treatment). Also at two hours, about 35 percent had relief from their most bothersome symptom, such as light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, or nausea, compared with about 27 percent with placebo.

In a separate study of preventive treatment for episodic migraine, people taking Nurtec ODT every other day experienced a significant reduction in monthly migraine days at 12 weeks. Almost 50 percent of people saw their days with moderate to severe headache pain intensity cut in half, compared with 41.5 percent with placebo.

How long does Nurtec ODT take to work for migraine attacks?

After taking Nurtec ODT for a migraine attack, about 37 percent of people experienced pain relief within one hour, and about 59 percent experienced pain relief within two hours. For some people, pain relief lasted up to 48 hours.

Can Nurtec ODT be used with other medicines for migraine?

Some medicines can affect how Nurtec ODT works in your body. Your doctor will let you know what is safe and what should be avoided.

Do not take Nurtec ODT with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors or with strong or moderate CYP3A inducers. If you take Nurtec ODT with a moderate CYP3A4 inhibitor or a potent P-gp inhibitor, do not take another dose within 48 hours.
