Overview
Onzetra Xsail is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults. It should only be used if a clear diagnosis of migraine headache has been established. Onzetra Xsail is not indicated for prophylactic therapy (prevention of) migraine attacks or for treating cluster headaches. Onzetra Xsail is also known by its drug name, sumatriptan.

Sumatriptan is a type of triptan called a serotonin 5-HT1B/1D receptor agonist. Scientists believe it works by narrowing blood vessels around the brain and blocking pain signals, which helps to relieve migraine symptoms when an attack occurs.

How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Onzetra Xsail is administered as a nasal powder using the Xsail breath-powered delivery device. The recommended dose is one nosepiece in each nostril per migraine attack. If needed, a second dose may be taken at least 2 hours after the first, but the maximum dose should not exceed two doses in a 24-hour period. Onzetra Xsail should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Side effects
Common side effects of Onzetra Xsail include abnormal taste, nasal discomfort, rhinorrhea (runny nose), and rhinitis (nasal inflammation).

Rare but serious side effects may include myocardial ischemia or infarction (reduced blood flow to the heart or heart attack), Prinzmetal’s angina (chest pain caused by coronary artery spasm), arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), chest, throat, neck, jaw pain or tightness, cerebral hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain), subarachnoid hemorrhage (bleeding around the brain), stroke, gastrointestinal ischemia or infarction (reduced blood flow or tissue death in the intestines), peripheral vasospastic reactions (spasms of blood vessels in the limbs), medication overuse headache, serotonin syndrome (a potentially life-threatening reaction to too much serotonin), and seizures. Hypersensitivity reactions such as angioedema (swelling under the skin) and anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction) have also been reported.
