Overview
Qudexy XR is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the preventive treatment of migraine in people 12 years of age and older. It should be prescribed for people who experience frequent migraine attacks and need regular preventive medication, as determined by a healthcare provider. Qudexy XR is also known by its drug name, topiramate.

Qudexy XR is an anti-seizure medication that is believed to help prevent migraine attacks by calming overactive nerve signals in the brain. It is not used to treat a migraine attack once it has started, but rather to help reduce how often migraines occur.

How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Qudexy XR is taken by mouth as an extended-release capsule, usually once daily for migraine prevention. The capsule can be swallowed whole or opened and sprinkled onto a spoonful of soft food. The dosing schedule is gradually increased to the recommended maintenance dose over several weeks. Qudexy XR should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Side effects
Common side effects of Qudexy XR include paresthesia (tingling sensations), anorexia (loss of appetite), weight loss, difficulty with memory, taste perversion (altered taste), diarrhea, hypoesthesia (reduced sense of touch), nausea, abdominal pain, and upper respiratory tract infection.

Rare but serious side effects may include acute myopia (sudden nearsightedness) and secondary angle closure glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye that can lead to permanent vision loss), visual field defects (partial loss of vision), oligohydrosis (reduced sweating) and hyperthermia (increased body temperature), metabolic acidosis (too much acid in the body), suicidal behavior and thoughts, cognitive and neuropsychiatric reactions (such as depression or confusion), fetal toxicity (birth defects if taken during pregnancy), decreased bone mineral density, slowed growth in children, serious skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) or toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), hyperammonemia/encephalopathy (high ammonia in the blood leading to brain problems), kidney stones, and hypothermia (low body temperature).
