Overview
Tofranil is a prescription drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat depression. Tofranil is also known by its drug name, Imipramine. Some antidepressants are prescribed off-label to prevent migraines.

Tofranil is a tricyclic antidepressant. Tofranil is believed to work by changing the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain.

Side effects
The FDA-approved label for Tofranil lists common side effects including headache, blurred vision, strange dreams, drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, constipation, weight changes, swelling of breasts, and sexual dysfunction.

Rare but serious side effects listed for Tofranil include worsening depression and suicidal thoughts.
