Considerations:
Zomig is a type of medication called a triptan. It works by acting on serotonin receptors in blood vessels and pain nerves in the head. This may narrow blood vessels in the head and reduce chemicals linked to migraine pain.
Doctors prescribe Zomig when a person 12 years or older needs treatment for a migraine attack that is already happening, with or without aura.
Zomig is given as a nasal spray, typically taken at the start of a migraine attack. If needed, a second dose may be taken at least two hours later.
The recommended starting dose of Zomig for migraine is 2.5 milligrams as one nasal spray. If your headache comes back after using one nasal spray or you only get some relief from your headache, you can use another nasal spray two hours after the previous nasal spray.
The maximum single dose is 5 milligrams, and the maximum total dose is 10 milligrams in 24 hours.
This information is based on the prescribing information, but your healthcare provider may tailor your treatment plan. Always follow their guidance.

Members who use Zomig often say it helps most when they have a plan for when to use it, what to pair it with, and when to check in with their doctor. They also frequently mention tracking triggers, watching for side effects, and speaking up about insurance or refill limits that make it harder to manage migraine attacks.
Take Zomig early when you feel a migraine starting.
“I have learned to take the Zomig ASAP and then maybe it will cut it off. If I wait and just take Advil or something, I still end up with a migraine and it is worse.”
Talk to your doctor if Zomig is not working well enough.
“I had a short time that Zomig worked until it didn’t.”
Keep track of side effects and how Zomig makes you feel.
“Recently tried Zomig and it gave me horrible side effects too.”
Ask your doctor about refill limits and insurance coverage.
“They gave me Zomig and it works great. My insurance won’t pay for it though.”
Pay attention to triggers and patterns around your migraine attacks.
“I am also figuring out triggers. Dairy is definitely one of them. Fluorescent lights, loud crowds, and noise. Night driving with headlights is a huge one.”

How effective is Zomig?
In adults treating a moderate to severe migraine, 55 percent of people who used Zomig nasal spray 2.5 milligrams and 69 percent who used 5 milligrams had headache relief at two hours, compared with 31 percent who used placebo (an inactive treatment). In a pediatric study of ages 12 to 17, 30 percent of those who used Zomig 5 milligrams were pain-free at two hours, compared with 17 percent with placebo. The studies also found lower rates of light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, and nausea after treatment in some people.
How long does Zomig take to work for migraine?
Zomig is designed to treat a migraine after it starts. Some people may begin to feel relief within about one hour, but the medicine’s effectiveness is commonly evaluated two hours after a dose. How quickly it works can vary from person to person.
Can Zomig cause dizziness or unusual taste when used for migraine?
Yes. In adults using Zomig nasal spray, unusual taste occurred in 17 percent to 21 percent of people, and dizziness occurred in 3 percent to 6 percent. In children ages 12 to 17, unusual taste was also the most common side effect, occurring in 6 percent to 10 percent of people.
These side effects are usually mild, but people should talk to their healthcare provider if they are bothersome or do not go away.
Can Zomig be used with other medicines for migraine?
Zomig can interact with some other medicines used for migraine. Do not use Zomig within 24 hours of another triptan or an ergot-type migraine medicine. Using these medicines too close together can increase the risk of blood vessel spasm.
Zomig may also increase the risk of serotonin syndrome when taken with medicines such as SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, or MAO inhibitors. Serotonin syndrome is a rare but serious condition caused by too much serotonin in the body. People should seek medical help right away if symptoms occur.
