Is It Safe To Take Sumatriptans & Excedrin Migraine At The Same Time?
A MyMigraineTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was just prescribed Sumatriptans, but took and Excedrin Migraine 6 hrs ago. Is it safe to take the sumatriptans? The Excedrin Migraine did not work!

Thank you!

Not all triptans cause rebound headache and a significant number of neurologists now believe there is no such thing as a rebound headache for the vast majority of patients. Such as Dr. Alex Mauskop a professor of clinicalneurology and head ofapain clinic. Read hisbook: The Endof Migraines. A very small minority of patients have this problem but itis not common. You may want to try a longer acting triptan such as naratriptan which you can take one pill a day for 24/7 reflief providing you can find an open minded neuroligist or doctor. I realize we are alll different so it mayor may not help you, but might be worth considering.

I kept telling people this, also. Then, a nurse at an ER told me her son takes Excedrin Migraine for his migraines. When I told her they had the same exact active ingredients as regular Excedrin, she said the Migraine had more caffeine! It does not, they are exactly the same as i said before and as you also said. You pay more for less pills with an extra word on the label!!

I used to take Execedrine for migraines but it really messed up my stomach. Plus it is not good for the liver due to the acetaminophen in it. The caffeine was also too much for me. I only keep it around if I run out of the Sumatriptan. I take the Sumatriptan sparingly due to its propensity to cause rebound headaches. I only take 25 mg. and I am also only allowed 9 pills a month for that reason. The 25 mg. helps for me. I would like to get on a preventative medication that did not have so many side effects. I have been recommended Gabapentin and Cymbalta and Botox but have refused all 3. For those whose migraines are not triggered by exercise, I would highly recommend exercise as it gets more O2 into the tissues including the brain. As Yoni Whittman, a pain management expert, says, we all need kinetic flow to be free of pain and studies have proven movement does help reduce migraines, unless of course your migraines are triggered by exercise. Look up Yoni Whittman on line and watch his videos on the Pain Fix Protocol. I purchased his series and am eager to start watching it for pain reduction suggestions. I am also doing some micro current therapy through the Hache Pain Free for Life Protocol. Look up Dr. Robert Vanbergen and his microcurrent practice in British Columbia. I am going to try it. I feel anything is worth a try in addition to medications. I would like to learn more about neuromodulation as a non-medicine protocol as well. Food sensitivities and weather changes can induce migraines as well. Yesterday I felt lousy due to rainy cold weather. Today I have a low grade left sided migraine with neck pain which I am using an ice hat for and massaging my head and doing a little bit of vagus nerve microcurrent therapy. I also went up stairs to my woman cave and laid down on a mat with a towel roll underneath my head as recommended by Dr. Whittman. My migraine is starting to feel better.

You are exactly right! Excedrin Migraine is EXACTLY the same as Excedrin extra strength and therefore no one should pay more for “migraine’ on the lable. The caffeine does help a little, However, it is so easy to take too much and wind up with rebound headache, which is so frustrating to deal with. Also, NSAIDs are really rough on the stomach. My neurologist told me to never take anything over the counter for migraine. There are many rescue meds available and preventives are also available now.
