Does Botox Help?
A MyMigraineTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been having chronic migraines for like 10 yrs. nothing helps my last shot is Botox. Kind of scared to try it. What are your thoughts of someone that has had Botox? My neurologist suggested this. I have tried all meds and nothing works. I am on prevention meds and I get rebound headaches from over taking the meds because of having them so much. I have to call out of work all the time and they even threatened to write me up for Missing so many days. There is nothing I can do about it. I am… read more

I've been on Botox for about 4 years. I went from having a migraine everyday to having them 2-3 times a week, except during my menstrual cycle. I say it works. It takes 2-3 treatments to get into your system. The 1st treatment is very odd and it's like a bunch of small pinches. I'm a wimp, so maybe that's why. I bruise every time on my forehead. A few very small, hardly noticeable bruises. The temples were the most painful but it's quick. No naproxen before the treatment and you can't lay down or bend over for 4 hours. I got little 30 second migraines throughout the day that were about 10 minutes apart. All of this only happened on my 1st treatment. My doctor said it was common. I get them every 3 months. After around 2 1/2 months my migraines start to pick up again and get more frequent, but not like before. You need to have 16 or more per month to qualify. Also, there's a Botox savings card that will help you pay for your out of pocket expenses. I say go for it! I hope this helps. 😊

It didn't work for me. It has been 9 yrs. And new meds are so expensive I could never afford them. I'm single and on disability. Nothing has worked for me either. Good luck if you try it, it may work for you.

I was very leery about the Botox shots as well, but just taking pills wasn't doing enough to stop the pain. I had talked to my neurologist and I trusted him enough to finally try them. The relief was amazing. I admit the first shots took about a day to take full effect and I'm glad I had someone drive me to get them. (I had to travel about 3 hours one-way to my neuro for the shot). The worst of the pain was gone and it stayed gone for 3 months until the next shot. That one was transferred to another neuro 1 1/2 hours away. Been doing that for 2 years every 3 months. I am about to switch to Aimovig, you might ask your doctor about that as well. Good luck .

I tried Botox for a year. Didn’t help at all. I’ve been on Aimovig for this past year. I haven’t had a migraine since I’ve used it. It’s been a miracle drug for me.
