A MyMigraineTeam Member asked a question 💭

A family member with chronic migraine has a problem with sleep walking. The sleep walking doesn't always occur when she has a migraine but I wonder if the sleep disorder is related in any way to her migraines.

Sleep disorders and migraines often have a complex relationship. While sleepwalking isn't specifically mentioned in the research, we do know that sleep disorders are common among people with migraines. The connection appears to be related to the central nervous system, which regulates both sleep patterns and migraine activity.

Studies have shown that poor sleep quality is linked to more frequent and severe migraines. The relationship works both ways - sleep problems can trigger migraines, and migraines can disrupt sleep patterns. Several factors may contribute to sleep disturbances in people with migraine:

• Low melatonin levels (the hormone that controls sleep-wake cycles)
• Pain from migraine attacks disrupting sleep
• The body's natural homeostasis (balance between being asleep and awake)
• Side effects from migraine medications

It would be worthwhile to discuss the sleepwalking with a healthcare provider or neurologist, as they can help determine if there's a connection and recommend appropriate treatment strategies.
