I have a “aura” or sensation that I haven’t seen anyone mention since I have been here. It has only happened a handful of times in my life,

I have, what I can only describe as a “lighting storm” that goes off in my head. To me, I live in FL, so lighting storms are common, but I will start getting a migraine and it somehow morphs into a full on lightning storm in my head. It is excruciating for a couple of seconds straight, as the “lightning “ strikes all over my brain. I typically scream during the few seconds, and they come in waves. Some MyMigraineTeam members have described colorful, unusual visual experiences during their auras. One member shared seeing "black-and-white pictures with areas filled with bright pink and bright blue that hurt my eyes." Another described "red lights flashing all around my room" and "moving grayish flying shadows."

Visual auras happen because of electrical or chemical waves moving through the brain. Your "lightning storm" could be an intense version of this electrical activity, especially since it comes in waves and lasts only seconds at a time.

Regarding smell, strange odors are actually a recognized aura symptom. Some people experience phantom smells or heightened sensitivity to odors during migraine attacks. Your experience of regaining smell but only detecting nauseating scents could be related to this sensory disruption.
