I've been on Aimovig for 5 months now. Started taking the higher dose in January 2025. I take my Aimovig on the 22nd. It seems like every month, I get a 'breakthrough migraine' smack dab in the middle of the month. Is that normal?

Ok since you have only been on it for a little while and it isn’t working as well as you’d like to I would tell your doctor then and see if he can put you on something else. Usually they like you to be on a medication for at least 3 months so that you give it enough time to work. Since you’ve been on it for 5 months now and it isn’t working as well as you’d want it too, ask dr to give you something else. No since in suffering when there are many other medications that can work for you without the break throughs.

Ok, thanks for the info.
The month prior to me starting Aimovig, I had a migraine that lasted all the way through September 2024. I couldn't get a break from it. That's what prompted my neuro to put me on Aimovig. Since my neuro put me on the 140mg, I only have maybe 8-12 migraine days a month.
I have 1 or 2 migraines a month only lasting 2 to 3. The medication seems to wear off after 2 weeks. But, considering what an improvement this has made- it is a win.
No, Aimovig is the only anti-CGRP that I've tried. Before that, I was just on a synthetic anticonvulsant that was used as an off-label. Was on it from 2018 (year I was diagnosed with migraine) to January of this year. I usually update my doctor weekly about my seizures and migraine, anyway.
Maybe talk to your neuro and let him/her know that you are still getting break through migraines. He/She may want to change it to something else. Have you ever tried Ajovy? It is an injectable it worked for a while but then stopped working. I’ve been through pretty much all the newer medications and old alike. I think my neuro has pretty much given up on me after 25 years…lol.
Hopefully you can get with your neuro so you can get rid of the breakthroughs quickly!
