Now, I have migraine headaches for years, just recently started with tension headaches. Went to a Neurologist, did many tests, everything came back very good, without many issues. However, he prescribed Escitalopram to help with the tension headache, and mood, irritation that I've been experiencing. I live in a very hot climate which make things worse, I don't like summer because of that, very intolerable with heat, and the tension headache is becoming a greater issue than migraines. Is there… read more

I had tension headaches (puzzle piece) from a very tense neck. My Neurologist asked if I was willing to try a "neck stretcher" - sure (amxzon $16.00) for Neck and Shoulder Relax (also Cervical traction). It did more for my spine than neck. Next after a few months, Neuro asked if I was willing to try Dry Needling, I'm willing to try anything, gave referred to Physical Therapy (PT) Dry Needling. Note: Insurance pays for the PT part, I pay $23.00 for the needling part per session. If you hear insurance doesn't cover, keep pursuing. I went to the first session not knowing and when the PT told me $23.00, let’s try it!!! My range of motion was 28 degrees left and right with pain - before needling. After first needling - first time in 4 years the tension headache was absolutely gone and range of motion improved, (wonderful), the Relief lasted 4 hours. PT also prescribed Exercises - gentle stretching. By trial found 4 that work for me. After 3 sessions, I asked if I could have sessions 2x / week and after 4 weeks of 2x, I went back to 1x. The Neurologist was happy with the results and prescribed Baclofen 5mg tab 3x/ day (muscle relax). I gave it 2 weeks and requested increase, now 10mg tab 3x/ day - seems to be maintaining muscles. (Providers always want to start low and I ask how fast can it be increased.) The Needling Relief was longer as the sessions went on. Then I had major sinus surgery (6 hours gps computer guided high tech surgery) and went back to square one with headaches. That’s ok, was major surgery and we now had a plan going forward. Note: Sinuses (puzzle piece) Wonderful! After 23 needling session, range of motion 70 degrees left and right, normal. I'm at 1x month session - just to make sure everything stays in check.

It’s a journey, best wishes on your journey!

It's quite common for people to experience both tension headaches and migraines. Tension headaches typically feel like a tight band around your head affecting both sides, unlike migraines which usually affect one side. Heat can indeed trigger both types of headaches, making summer particularly challenging.

Here are some non-medication approaches that may help manage tension headaches:
• Managing stress through meditation or yoga
• Maintaining good posture
• Applying ice or heat to sore muscles
• Getting adequate sleep
• Avoiding environmental triggers Many MyMigraineTeam members have shared similar experiences with multiple types of headaches. While medications like Rizatriptan work specifically for migraines, tension headaches often respond well to a combination of lifestyle adjustments and stress management techniques. If you're hesitant about medications, consider discussing alternative treatment options with your healthcare provider, as there may be other approaches that could work for your specific situation.
