Yes, there is a general standard protocol for Botox injections used to prevent migraines. The typical recommendation involves 31 injections totaling 155 units of Botox, spread across seven areas of the head, face, and neck. That said, doctors often personalize this. In fact, more than 3 out of 4 doctors in the U.S. report using more than 155 units and adjusting injection sites based on a person's specific symptoms.

A few other things worth knowing:

- Appointments are typically short, around 20 minutes
- Effects usually last about 3 months, after which injections are repeated
- It's important to have this done by a neurologist or headache specialist — not a cosmetic provider, as the targets are different and cosmetic Botox may not be as effective for migraines

Results aren't always immediate and may take several rounds of treatment before a noticeable difference is felt. Always work closely with your doctor to find the approach that fits your needs best.
