Daith Pierce
A MyMigraineTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello.
I am thinking about getting a daith piercing for chronic migraines. I have used just about everything all over the years. I currently take propranolol, but it seems to becoming less effective and I frequently get breakthrough migraines lasting for days.
I see a lot of people say that this pierce is very painful, just wondered if it is more painful than a helix pierce or a navel pierce, which I have had previously?
Thanks in advance. Cate

A nurse does piercings and she said to do it on the opposite side of your margarine. I had mine on the right so got my daith on the left. It hurts like a mofo but she said I have thick cartilage, took 3 tries to get it through. My mom’s chiropractor says the more you use a pressure point the less it works. My migraine went away for awhile. I’m get them from time to time, maybe not as bad.

Hi Cate,
I suffer from chronic migraines as well, and also take propranolol (for my tachycardia, never knew that could be used for migraines as well.) I have had an ongoing migraine for 6 days now, and just recently within the past hour have finally went and got the daith piercing.

As someone who has now 10 piercings, it's defiantly not as painful as I was expecting. I thought it would hurt a little worse than it did because the cartilage is pretty thick in that area. I would honestly say it's about the same or a little less painful than a navel piercing (that I also have.)

If anything it's more pressure than pain, and more uncomfortable once they put the jewelry in rather than the initial piercing. It's normal to be anxious before any piercing, and always keep in mind since it's cartilage there might be a slight 'popping' sound.

I have suffered debilitating migraines for more than 10 years and have tried multiple RX prevention meds and treatments, including Botox. I still had daily migraines that 2 doses of RX rescue meds would not get rid of. A year ago, after months of research on Daith Piercing, I finally had mine pierced. It was uncomfortable during the initial piercing, but not more than chronic migraines! My migraines have been reduced in frequency AND intensity!! Now I only have a migraine once or twice a month and can manage it with ONE dose of Rx meds or just OTC Aleve! If I feel the nausea and confusion of a migraine aura when it starts, I can gently press on the earring for a few seconds and when I release it, the pain slides away too.
